At first I though a lifepreserver:
... as in "SAVE ME!", but I realize some software already uses it as a support icon, as in "HELP ME!". Because of the dual interpretation, I think it is a poor choice for either.

Perhaps a little Jesus? Doesn't work for everybody, but I imagine most folks'l get the idea. Or even better, perhaps OS's should include a "Religious Preference" control panel, and selections made within would control the "save" icon. No, even that is no good... athiests such as myself would be unable to save files. Nuts.
DG, What might that look like?

OH MY GOD, that's the best idea I've ever heard. No pun intended. Wow. You must have had your 8 uninterrupted minutes this morning.
Awesome. Go DG.
Being the girly girl that I am, it only makes logical sense to have a purse to save your files in. http://www.drw.ru/img/icon_purse.gif
And if you really want to priss it up:

PS> I really want the Jesus icon to look like a graphical little guy similar to these philosopher puppets.
Make it happen.
perhaps a pocket. I put things in my pockets to save them. I'm really not clever. Jesus was WAY better.
Something else to consider: since the computing world has already co-opted "spam" as a term for undesireable/undigestible content, perhaps it makes sense to stick with the food-related trademarks and have the "save" icon be a little Tupperware container?
In light of something amusing, meh.
Dang it! Foiled by the ever-witty D.G. again!
Yet another "Save" icon possibility: a whale.
How about a file cabinet? Seems like a logical place to put files to me, though I'm not one to take my own advice.
Erm ... a mattress maybe?
Oh, an icon? I thought you said shoulder patch ...
I'm still stuck on this Jesus thing. Here's an icon, but it's size probably only works for Mac users. ;)

For some reason it won't publish that url. Here is the address, plus page returns.
