The Save Icon is Dead. Long Live the Save Icon!

July 21, 2005

Defective Guru and I were just talking about this the other day and then I stumble upon a post about the need to replace the floppy disk icon as the GUI metaphor for saving a file.

Coincidence? Or is something greater at work? Perhaps it is merely a plot to get DG to update his flippin' blog.

Yes, and only something as arcane as user interface semiotics could rouse his slumber.

Imagine, to awaken from a 4000 year sleep, craving the knowledge of the passing ages, only to be thwarted by Lotus 1-2-3.

(rubs crust from eyes.) "Did I hear somebody say user interface semiotics?"

On a sidenote, I was going through my files while visiting my hometown this past weekend, and I found an old floppy diskette. This diskette holds an old "digital" diary from my freshman year of high school.

What's the reasonable expectation of me breaking into this damn thing? Does anyone know anybody that has a real floppy drive?

Jen,

I have a floppy drive. Please bring me your diary, I mean disk, and we'll have a look-see.
